Lisu Lodge by Asian Oasis, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province
The Lisu came from eastern Tibet, moving through Yunnan and Myanmar over centuries, keeping to the highest parts of the hill ranges. Semi-nomadic by nature, they carried their history not in buildings but in songs — songs so long they take an entire night to sing. They are known for their music, their dance, and their textiles — geometric stitchwork in red, black, white and hand-dyed indigo, each motif a record of clan, season and ceremony. Passed from mother to daughter. The women are the makers and teachers.
The Building
Four houses built on stilts in the traditional Lisu way — walls and floors of woven bamboo strips, high roofs that pull the mountain air through the building. You remove your shoes before entering. The woven floor under bare feet connects you to something — the craft of it, the patience of it. The lodge overlooks rice fields and orchards, the hills rising on every side. The Lisu village is a few steps away.
The Stay
Breakfast and dinner are included — Thai, local, sourced from the lodge’s own organic garden and rice fields, served on the veranda with the valley below. The programme includes walking tours of the village with a Lisu guide and bicycle rental.
Beyond that: white water rafting on the Mae Taeng River. Bamboo rafting. Guided treks through the jungle. Forest bathing. Rice planting. Steam bath. Thai massage. The Araksa Tea Garden — Asian Oasis’s own organic garden and roastery, twenty minutes away — where the late King Bhumibol encouraged tea growing to replace the opium trade decades ago.
And the embroidery. Sitting with the women of Lisu who make it, learning the patterns the Lisu carried from Tibet — the indigo dyed from fermented leaves, the geometric stitchwork that records who you are and where you come from. Each motif a small act of continuity.
After dinner, the Lisu villagers come and dance. You are expected to join in. Nobody minds that you don’t know the steps.
